The Old Bat Rides Again!

Can't resist a chance to wear this shirt:

You may remember this from last year.

The glitter washed out, so I redid it all with actual fabric paint. I don't know if I'll be wearing the cape today, but I will wear the shirt. I wore it to FedEx the other day and got a good laugh from the kid who works there - the "kid" is probably in his late 30s. If I'm gonna be an Old Bat, I've got to play the role.

  • Complain about the music kids listen to today
  • "Kids" will be anyone under 40
  • Say often, "When I was growing up..."
  • Make a slight moan or grunt when I stand up
  • Start long chats with cashiers
  • Drive really slowly, or else a little too fast and erratically
  • Eschew modern technology as much as possible

Are getting into your role for Halloween?

Creeping up the stairs, carrying my shoes

I'm sorry, I haven't been around much. You see, I've been working late. Yes, every night - you can call my (home) office if you want to. No, that's not lipstick on my collar.

I'm trying to build up my editing business, and that seems to include a whole lotta blog-reading - other kinds of blogs, for publishers, self publishers, editors, marketing, blah blah. And I, um, I've been, um, cruising around on forums and Google groups. Afterwards I'm just spent and don't feel like computering any more, so I haven't been visiting your blogs.

And - boy this is really hard - I may have started up another blog.

I'm sorry, I wasn't planning it! I was drunk, and it just happened. Please forgive me. In fact, if it's not too weird, maybe we can all do something together. Is that too kinky?

from my VOGOFF shoot

Here's the thing - building the business is going slow, so if you or anyone you know is self-publishing, or works for a book publisher, and in need of a copy editor, please think of me! My new blog is here where there's more info about my other life. If you're not into this kind of thing, that's okay - no one's pressuring you.

Let me make it up to you - let's go out and have a good time.

Dexter Lake Club, Sunday Jam with their house band and a roster of drop-in musicians. Let me tell you, the house band and the musicians who come to play here are smokin' hot!

The owner (not in this photo) plays guitar like a rock god, and the other regular guitarist (to the left in this pic) is just as awesome - I may have moaned a little when they started out. The Dexter Lake Club was used in the movie Animal House - the zebra wallpaper is still there!

Well, that was fun! But listen, I need a little space right now. We'll still be friends, but I just need to find out who I am (and earn some money). Then I'll be back - we'll always be together.

O my! It's October Hat Attack!

I love October! Besides being my birthday month, October usually has lovely weather as the seasons change hands. It's a time to savor before the leaves are gone, the days are short, and all the hype and shopping madness take over for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

I actually don't like Halloween very much any more. It's become over-consumerized and grown-up oriented. I mean, we always did spend money on candy and costumes and cardboard decorations. But now every other house is lit up with purple and orange lights, and scarecrows and pumpkins and hay bales tumble down the porch steps, and people who work at banks and restaurants try to punch keys with werewolf hands or serve food while wearing long wigs and mermaid fins.

I guess I'm a Halloween grinch. How did that happen? I like candy corn, and I don't mind the trick-or-treaters - they're usually pretty cute. And I did have the best costume ever last year (here).

The clothes are all old, had them for years. And yes, it was warm enough for sandals - until it rained.

Here I'm playing around with a plastic costume fedora (seen in VOGOFF and in yesterday's Scavenger Hunt) to join Hat Attack! with the Style Crone.

How do you feel about Halloween - an orgy of sugar madness, or a socially acceptable excuse for playing dress-up?

(Those are not the only acceptable answers.)
